We provide advice on investment, competitive, regulatory and marketing strategy. We are adept at examining the implications of alternative market and economic scenarios.

Financial impact

For an Asian operator, we developed a financial impact model to explore the effect of various business strategies for its wholesale products.

Equipment procurement

We provided technical advice and assistance to an operator in procuring a cost-effective mobile system. We recommended appropriate technical specifications for a 4G network, and advised how to strengthen the tender and procurement process.

Market demand and strategies

We developed a market model of the likely penetration and uptake profile by residential and business customers of a new regional fibre deployment. Our model encompassed a set of different competitive scenarios, and we identified key marketing strategies in order to secure the forecast uptake profile.

Regulatory pricing

As part of a regulatory pricing review for unbundled copper local loop and unbundled bitstream access services in New Zealand, we advised Spark New Zealand and Vodafone New Zealand on key economic issues. We reviewed the regulator’s modelling and provided expert advice on demand issues, cost of capital, price trends, and appropriate technology choice.

Spectrum valuation

For a major Asian mobile operator, we developed statistical models to estimate national spectrum prices for 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2.1GHz spectrum, based on a benchmark analysis of international auction results. Estimates from the models were used in discussions with regulators and in planning for future spectrum awards.

Operational performance

We benchmarked the performance and costs of a major Asian operator against other operators in Asia, Europe and the United States. Using historical data, we showed how performance has altered over time in response to a large number of factors, including tariff rebalancing, competition and the degree of regulation. A number of strategic recommendations were made to improve revenue and profitability and to assist the operator in its review of tariffs and tariff rebalancing proposals.
