NZ team advises Australian Government on text communications
Assessing future directions for disability equipment and services
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 6 March 2007 - The telecommunications consultancy Network Strategies Limited has produced a groundbreaking report on text communications for people with disabilities on behalf of the Australian Government.
Our report, Assessment of text any-to-any connectivity options future directions for text communications, assessed the technical feasibility and financial viability of the text server proposed by the Communications Alliance, formerly the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF). The proposed text server provides any-to-any text connectivity for people who are deaf or who have a hearing or speech impairment. The report also identified and assessed alternative Australian and international solutions that had arisen since the release of the ACIF report.
There have been significant developments in text telephony over recent years, with the potential of much greater functionality than that offered by the traditional Baudot teletypewriter or TTY, commented Noelle Jones, Principal Consultant and lead author of the report. However it is crucial that advances such as the implementation of next generation networks continue to enable effective and affordable communications solutions for people with disabilities.
Text communication is now a mainstream service, allowing people with disabilities more options to interact with a wider community of interest, said Dr Suella Hansen, the Auckland-based Director of Network Strategies. In addition, advanced platforms that support voice, text and video are now commercially available from several vendors, a far more cost-effective option than developing solutions in-house.
